Everything Apple needs to be made easier. I should be able to put in my own dialer, one that can record phone calls. After all, I am in a one-party consent state.
I should be able to switch out the Photos app, one that integrates with Google Photos or Amazon Photos or Synology so that it natively back ups there and where it can natively pull the photos from.
- Eddy_Viscosity2 3y agoApple didn't get to nearly $3Trillion market cap by letting people do what they want.
- type0 3y agohow is this related?
- Eddy_Viscosity2 3y agoIt was a reply to a comment by someone listing the things they wanted Apple to make easier/possible to do.
- threeseed 3y ago> I should be able to put in my own dialer, one that can record phone calls Allowing third party apps to actually record your voice. In a climate where many types of apps make money purely through selling your data to data brokers who in turn syndicate that data to countless other companies and governments. All without your knowledge or explicit consent. And where mere snippets of your voice is enough to have a model authentically replicate it and use it for social engineering or to access services that rely on voice identification e.g. Australian Tax Office. In terms of the worst ideas ever, this is easily one of them.
- Ukv 3y ago> > I should be able to put in my own dialer, one that can record phone calls > Allowing third party apps to actually record your voice. Android/iOS already allow apps to request microphone access. > In a climate where many types of apps make money purely through selling your data to data brokers "my own" should be able to include something I've compiled myself - not just Apple's App Store or Google Play Store, which even when source code is available elsewhere there's no guarantee that's what was used for the binary available on the store.
- TheNewsIsHere 3y agoI think you’re making an orthogonal point to my response here, but I did want to note that technically there is nothing stopping any of us from writing a CallKit app that could do this. But it’s a huge pain in the ass just to get call recordings. That kind of effort shouldn’t be necessary in 2023, and it’s asinine that we don’t have call recording natively yet. (Though, we also don’t have any sane way of archiving Visual Voicemail data despite the fact that they’re just audio files downloaded via IMAP.) I agree that a “nanny state” prohibition on useful features for the user just because some actors are abusive is a touch crazy.
- WirelessGigabit 3y agoThe fact that the Australian Tax Office uses this method should not preclude me, a resident of a one party consent state, from recording a phone call. In fact, the fact that the Australian Tax Office used a security method that is highly flawed should not preclude me from recording a phone call.
- CharlesW 3y ago> I should be able to put in my own dialer, one that can record phone calls. After all, I am in a one-party consent state. This is not hard to do on iOS using apps like TapeACall, by recording a speakerphone conversation, etc. In case you think the grass is greener: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/04/googles-accessibility-crackdown-bans-call-recording-apps-from-the-play-store/ https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/04/googles-accessibilit...
- crossroadsguy 3y agoAnd bring “Internet permission” that I can turn off. Because I wouldn’t want a dialer or call recorder app to even look towards the Internet, let alone access it. But since we were on iCloud. You know what I would want more than data transfer from iCloud? An ability to use iCloud alternatives. Better file access to apps, yes with stricter permissions, but better access and preferential treatment to its own shitty apps.
- tinus_hn 3y agoYou are of course already allowed to not buy the phone if you hate everything it is.
- Asdrubalini 3y agoWhy buy an iPhone at this point? It's not that there aren't alternatives, there are tons of Android smartphones that do what you want and for cheaper.
- lockhouse 3y agoYou could just buy an Android phone instead since it can already do that, but I suspect you’re an Android user already and just like to complain about Apple.
- djhn 3y agoAs an android user who's failed throughout recent years to find an app that does real call recording (not just your end of the conversation), has the situation changed? Are there apps you're aware of that do this?
- lockhouse 3y agoSorry, I’m an iPhone user now, I was just under the impression that Android supported that scenario, but I could be mistaken.
