PM is the choose-your-own-adventure role
- turtleyacht 3y agoThat sounds pretty exciting. Combined with programming skills, one could craft a whole array of tools for "superpowers." I get the impression PMs have to make due with influence instead of authority, but as a dev I really appreciate how they are able to--nee must--distill back-to-back business meetings into actionable requirements and stories. And, on top of that, to be "the voice of the customer" if there is not a Product Manager, under existing deadlines, sounds pretty daunting.
- fred_is_fred 3y agoAt most companies I've been at, this role would be Product Manager based on what he described. Most places I have been that had Program Managers - they managed schedule interlocks, deliverables, helped coordinate between teams like engineering, docs, support, sales, etc. They also managed the required ceremonial material that large enterprises seem to require in order to deliver - like review slides, "sign off" docs, etc. So is this really what a program manager at Microsoft does as described therein? If so that completely changes my view based on several non-Microsoft roles.
