Aks HN: You Can't Have Both
I started a new gig. The manager told me from the get go that they want to establish a more professional approach to how the company developes software.
Things like review of code, ci/cd, less waterfall etc. You know things that has been pretty much defacto standard since ~2012.
Now the other day I said "let me review John's code before he checks in".
Manager said "good idea but I don't want to stop John's progress, so let's not review this time".
You can't have boundaries which can be easily jumped over. You can't have both - fast and quality.
Now what?
- kidgorgeous 3y ago1. shut up, do your work, and get paid 2. quit and find a more consistent employer u needed to ask this on a public message board?
- anon35 3y agoMonitor and measure the boundary jumping. Treat it as any other business metric you want to improve.
- houseatrielah 3y agoDon't internalize it. Get a different job with higher pay in ~1-year.
- brudgers 3y agoBecause change happens over time, you can have both one in the present and the other in the future. Good manager's implement change at a pace in sync with workplace culture. Most places that means not acting a cowboy in Dodge City. Sure if you're buying Twitter you have enough power to get away with it. If you're a new hire without executive authority, you usually can't. Anyway, good, fast, chea: pick one and consider yourself lucky if you get it.
