Of the two major Russian revolutions over the past century, both were undergirded by debilitating economic woes caused partially by military overreach and struggles on the battlefield. For most of us who do not believe in some latent NATO evil plan to conquer Russia, the expense is even more shocking when compared to how cheaply* Russia could have been reliably maintaining peaceful borders. (A national goal which is not the same as keeping Putin indefinitely in-power and ego-satisfied.)
