I think this is flawed thinking. For one thing it benefits everyone to help those who have been systematically disadvantaged. Also, respecting people = giving them needed material benefits not saying “I respect you” We need to keep revisiting the shameful times lest they are forgotten instead of forgetting about them and moving on.
