I don't personally equate "generic" with "trash". Many marketing firms produce generic content that's "good enough". But that's rarely seen as a good thing.
I'm less interested in content farms and more in the use case described in TFA. Why do we need content? So far it's been seen as a signal of... well, something. Maybe not quality but, success? At least a signal that you can afford competent writers. If that's no longer true, what will the web look like in a few years (outside of social media)? SPAs everywhere? Or bigger sets of pages that don't really say anything?
