Google is providing a service which is distribution for their advertising business.
If you break a news story, your page shows up first for that result which means you get millions and millions of views for free. Why should they pay THEM for that?
- bell-cot 3y ago> Google is providing a service...millions of views for free... If I looked at the financial statements of the various local newspapers & such over the past ~20 years, then the incredible value that Google is delivering to those actual news organizations would be obvious...right? Especially compared to Google's mediocre revenues from their SRP pages that are filled with those local news stories...right?
- motoxpro 3y agoJust because they are available doesn’t mean they are entitled to them. You’re forgetting that millions of other people are competing for that same spot. Newspapers are competing for space against my tweet, blog, internet site, Netflix, tiktok, IG, etc. they had no competition before. I don’t think you could say that local newspapers ALWAYS break the story and if not, why should they be compensated for just “retweeting” what someone else has done? In fact, I would say that social media users break way more stories than local newspapers.
