Electrify America Will Switch to Tesla’s Charging Plug
- WorldMaker 3y agoI had been predicting Electrify America would call it before Volkswagen. Even though Volkswagen paid a lot to fund Electrify America, they are still separate organizations with different goals and processes.
- foxyv 3y agoUnless there is something uniquely special about the old J1772 and CCS standard, I think this is an un-qualified win for American electric charging. Anything that reduces the number of plug types is a win in my book. Especially considering Tesla's open patent agreement.
- clouddrover 3y ago> Especially considering Tesla's open patent agreement. Tesla's "open" patent agreement was completely unworkable and a bad deal: https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a35030461/why-other-car-companies-dont-use-tesla-superchargers/ https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a35030461/why-other-car-co... No one was ever going to go anywhere near it.
- foxyv 3y agoOh, that's kinda brutal. Thank you for the information! They pretty much could infringe on any patent or copyright of any company that uses their charge plug with no consequences. Yeesh! Not to mention that if your car just looks kinda like a Tesla... Despite the fact that a Tesla looks like a bunch of other cars! Note: It kind of reminds me of the Apple Authorized Repair contract. Sign away your life to fix MacBooks!
- clouddrover 3y ago> That’s curtains for CCS, folks No. All North American chargers will be CCS chargers just with Tesla's plug on the end. But it's a profoundly stupid outcome that North America still hasn't completely agreed on a plug to use. Europe's EV infrastructure is much more developed because everyone can build to a common standard. Europe is deploying 400 kW CCS Chargers while North America is trying to figure out how to plug in.
- vardump 3y agoI wish Europe had a slimmer plug standard. CCS2 is monstrous.
