"I think admissions interviews are more likely."
Won't this bring race right back into it, though? Accusations of discrimination?
Maybe phone interviews...but voice gives away many clues as well...
- twobitshifter 3y agoIt will likely be used for that but it’s something that can’t easily be proved. Even first and last names can give away race. SC didn’t make admissions anonymous.
- JimtheCoder 3y ago"SC didn’t make admissions anonymous." I know, but making at least an effort to be as impartial as possible still seems like a good idea. Reducing the opportunities where the potential for accusations of racial discrimination would probably make the system seem a little more just... Just my thoughts...
- NoZebra120vClip 3y ago> Even first and last names can give away race. While one can sometimes infer some speculation about an individual based on their name (I do it all the time) this is an exercise fraught with peril. Names are, how shall we say, user-generated content in the first place. In the second place, race is a social construct defined by the person who chooses to identify that way. So if you, as an institution, begin to discriminate based on someone's name, accent, style of dress, skin color, how they smell, or the consistency of their earwax, then you're making decisions not really on race, but on what you imagine and impute that race to be, since you haven't asked the subject directly. Discrimination based on speculation is no less discrimination, of course, but it's definitely a different character than discrimination based on some known, concrete demographic fact.
- rawgabbit 3y agoJohn Roberts said it was fine if the applicant brought up race, either in an essay or otherwise. Nothing in this opinion should be construed as prohibiting universities from considering an applicant's discussion of how race affected his or her life, be it discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise. John Robert did say universities cannot construct race based quotas indirectly from essays or through some other means. ...universities may not simply establish through application essays or other means the regime we hold unlawful today.
