Cleaner accidentally ruins decades of college’s research by turning off freezer
- COGlory 3y agoThis is stupid and sensational. The primary objective of research is knowledge. Either the samples resulted in knowledge, which is great, or they did not, in which case they are mostly worthless. Maximum there's 3-5 years of "working" samples in that freezer, and likely less. Not 25. Anything older than a few years would have already been finished working with, and if needed, could be regenerated again much more easily, now that the researchers learned how to make them.
- defrost 3y agoScientific samples are kept for a reason. Do you know the reason the samples discussed were kept? Here's one of many sample archives: https://research.csiro.au/acc/capabilities/cape-grim-air-archive/ https://research.csiro.au/acc/capabilities/cape-grim-air-arc...
- COGlory 3y agoResearch != scientific samples in a freezer. 25 years of research were not ruined just by ruining some samples that can be recreated. The claim in the article: >A cleaner at a college in New York state accidentally destroyed decades of research by turning off a freezer in order to mute “annoying alarm” sounds. No, the research was not destroyed.
- defrost 3y agoI'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you don't have any knowledge of the actual reason the samples were being kept then.
- pestatije 3y agothis reminds me of the trading room cleaner who triggered a ruinous transaction from a terminal left waiting for confirmation
- defrost 3y agoSomebody walked away from a live terminal with a ruinous transaction pending on the press of an enter key? Where did fault truly lie here and what protocols would prevent this in future?
