I have to imagine this is less than like... a normal holiday weekend or something. And it mostly recovered after/ is recovering.
> advertisers were less willing to do business with the platform while the protests were underway.
I'm sure this is true. I know it's true actually. They'll just wait a few days or weeks - it kinda fucks up some advertisers quarterly goals around their campaigns but they'll be fine.
> In general, I think the impact [of the protest] will depend on how long the mutiny lasts and what the final result is
The reality is that it's already pretty much over. Very few communities, certainly the big ones that make it to r/all, are fully locked down. At best they're doing the same exact thing as always but with some john oliver meme overlayed, which... is not going to discourage engagement at all. At this point I don't notice a difference except that r/programming, a place with some of the absolute lowest tier content for programming information, is still offline - a blessing, perhaps.
Any that are still offline are going to get reassigned to new moderators later anyway. Duh.
IMO the blackout was completely ineffective and also totally pointless.
a) There seems to be a widespread misunderstanding that the API changes are going to make all bots impossible. That's not true. Lots of bots will be under the API limits and get charged $0. The top 100 most popular moderation bots are exempt from the API limits (the most popular ones don't hit them anyways).
b) Apps that are designed for accessibility are being allowed to continue for free
Further, the alternatives suck. Sorry, they do. I hate decentralized fediverse UX as it mixes horribly with web browsers. Also, and I say this as someone who is 99% gone from Twitter and now fully on Mastodon, the critical mass just isn't there.
Anyway let me know if I've missed something about the billing changes or am somehow misunderstanding this.
