We switched database providers and our ORM saved us a ton of effort. Sure we ran into issues due to differences between the DBs, but every single insert, update and JPQL query in our app ported over without issue. The few places where we used native SQL, on the other hand, needed to be tweaked and rewritten. If we were making heavy use of native SQL and stored procedures, it would have been an order of magnitude more time consuming. I used to be of the same opinion that swapping DB providers isn’t worth worrying about, because you’re screwed regardless. But our company was bought, and forced to make the change, and the ORM made a huge difference.
