- hackernewds 3y agoVery impressive. We fail to appreciate today that Sears used to be the Amazon of their time
- tastyfreeze 3y agoSlower turn around but just as convenient. Sears dominated mail order for 100 years.
- h2odragon 3y agoThe amazing thing is how hard Sears worked not to be the Sears of our time, leaving the field open for Amazon to eat their legacy.
- bluGill 3y agoMore amazing is they tried things like protege that failed and gave up right before the internet took off.

He nearly ripped out his own hair, since instead of being a web commerce department they were "online catalog", and the culture matched. Instead of adapting to the medium, they tried to force the medium to their offering, suffered when web-first companies showed up, and then decided the internet was a fad.
- jewayne 3y agoYep. In the early 90s the Big Box store reigned unchallenged. https://www.nytimes.com/1993/01/26/business/sears-eliminating-its-catalogues-and-50000-jobs.html https://www.nytimes.com/1993/01/26/business/sears-eliminatin...
