Sure, there'll be boomers who don't notice the input lag, but people who aren't good with tech would be better served by something like an iPad than a full desktop.
- warrenm 3y agoI've been exclusively VDI (or RD) for my Windows usage for the last half decade or more The "user experience" has been pretty dang good - every once in a [great] while there's a hiccup ... but those are so few and far between, they're hardly worth noting
- t-writescode 3y agoDo you do twitch-based gaming? That was particularly the situation where it was mentioned to be theoretically rough.
- warrenm 3y agonope - don't game at all my Windows use is exclusively for work/education VDI has been ample for all of those purposes :)
- solardev 3y agoVirtual desktops don't have to be horrible, and in fact can be faster than local if the server is more powerful (at compiling, or video editing, or gaming, or whatever) than your own machine and you're not bandwidth or latency constrained (which really isn't that hard). Some protocols (like RDP) are better than others too because they can send primitive window components instead of compressing raw pixels. As for gaming, it really only matters for shooters, IMHO. I frequently use GeForce Now and Shadow for gaming and they work great for most genres -- especially GeForce Now, which is honestly as good (and way quieter, cooler, and cheaper) than any bespoke desktop gaming rig I've ever built. I heard good things about Parcel too. Shadow is so so. But yeah, none of them are great for input latency sensitive games like twitch shooters. Fine for things like Diablo though.
