Experiences of People Running Mastodon Servers Suggest a Bumpy Road Ahead

This is worth examining, but one of the more enlightening examinations I'd like to see is a proper comparison of Mastodon, which is a big, hot mess with dependency hell, with other Fediverse software like Akkoma. I'm running Akkoma, for instance, and the CPU and memory overhead has been barely noticeable. I can't help but wonder how many of the issues that people have with Mastodon would be substantially mitigated by simply using better software.

So, is ActivityPub overly chatty? I was hoping to find out more about the cause of these operational woes. Similarly, how does it compare in traffic to similar amounts of data broadcast and federated on Matrix? Finally, thanks for the author setting the tone going in and being, willing to look critically without being a miser about federation in general. This is the kind of nuance probably needed to push things forward instead of rehashing myopic talking points.

Wish there was info about the bill for the lady who switched from servers in basement to digital ocean - A Terrabyte per day plus storage fees at DO for mastadon? Please do tell! With that kind of storage and transfer I am shocked she would not find a cheaper hosting option.
