There should be another term in addition to cargo cult thinking - something like {college, education, expert} cult. This is only an issue when it becomes an article of belief that "what we are told is true". In other words when you decide that your own experience, senses and thoughts are not valid.
As humans we cannot re-invent the wheel everyday. So we rely on google maps, even when that map tells us drive 200 miles north to Gray, Maine, do u-turn, come back and then drive to Montreal. We need to be able to trust information.
I am somewhat convinced that we do not change our minds because of two problems. The first is cascading loss of trust. If I can't trust google maps in that case, can I ever trust it? Or any other map software? Or any software? Or the internet? This is too hard.
The other problem is who to trust. If you don't trust that the US government is representing your interest and is a democracy, then who do you trust? Well we have the answer.
Our ability to change our mind is our ability to adapt. I have recently been pondering whether html-css is a completely outdated way to build a web UI. What about threejs, react-three, etc. I can think about it without problem in the abstract. But what happens to all the work I have done and am doing if I change my mind? And perhaps most influential is "What will people think of me?"
A person's ability to trust their own thinking as opposed to the current cult thinking is, to me, the best indicator of their intellectual value - completely orthogonal to their degree/education.
Edit: Oh and I can almost hear people thinking I am wrong. That is not the issue. The question is what if I am right? There is a YC video some place where a YC person talks about Silicon Valley as a place where when people hear an idea they don't go to "wrong/right" they go to what if it is true? Or partly true, or ...
