Straw man argument at best. This is anecdotal, but ridicule for reevaluating a position is not at all common in my experience. When people tie their identities to a specific idea, it becomes hard to change that idea as they or the idea evolve. Personally, I always try to dissociate the idea from the person; I really like the motto of “always happy to adopt a better idea”. Helps reduce the ego burden of switching.
