I feel like everytime a new abstraction layer is put together, it goes through the whole Gartner cycle, and somewhere along the plateau of productivity we realize that may be it should be rebuilt from scratch a few times. The answer is probably not on-prem, but a better clould that tames the abstraction layers and keeps things relatively flat. The whole infra-as-code, terraform, kubernetes, multicloud infra abstraction today, it's all too much.
