Twitter: 2 designers, 6 iOS devs, 20 web devs, and ~1,400 sales and ops people
- NhanH 3y agoEven IF Twitter could have been built with 30 developers (I have no opinion on whether this point is possible), I find it hard to believe that the system that was built by several hundred people (several thousands?) can be maintained by 30 of them. This is not a commentary on the ability level of either groups. 20 developers are just about more than enough for one on-call rotation as well, so hard to believe how the numbers would work out. At Twitter scale and across all their systems, I do expect incident to happen daily.
- senttoschool 3y agoNo way they only have 26 devs total. As someone down the comments noted, Linkedin shows they have 700+ devs.
- rsynnott 3y agoI would assume that the guy posting is a little confused. Possibly claiming that only some subset of their frontend are "web developers" and classifying everything else as 'ops', or something? Most of a company like Twitter's engineers couldn't reasonably be classified as "web developers". The tweet is prime HN-bait; a hot take, self-evidently not based on reality, but uttered with complete self-confidence.
- __d 3y ago6 for iOS, 20 for web ... how many for Android? And how many for backend? And devops (or are they included in the "operations" category)? Even on that incomplete data, I'm a little surprised that web is 3+ times iOS.
