I was at Edinburgh when this came out, and it went round the mailing list. Wadler replied saying he wasn't aware of the fact, and wanted to know the proof.
I was sharing an office a few floors down with Roko of Basilisk fame, who was the category theory guy. He thought about it for a few minutes and then took us through the proof on the board.
