It's because novels are an older and more established and prestigious medium. There are "old masters" solo novelists like Dickens or Tolstoy or Jane Austen or whatever. There aren't such analogous dead indie devs and the medium is not as venerated. For example John Carmack isn't even dead yet, and who knows if he will be known in the same way. He must be one of the OG game devs but I mean Commander Keen is any normie seriously going to compare that to War and Peace. Maybe it will happen but it's not going to happen any time soon.
EDIT: I feel like I'm getting downvoted so much because I wrote Jane Austen as an "old master" novelist and it's triggering hacker news dwellers who hate Jane Austen novels. Or maybe they think I'm channeling Roger Ebert to say that their favorite video games aren't art. I'm not saying that guys.
- smoldesu 3y agoPretty much what I was going to say. It also helps that books have fairly direct "runtimes" that don't get depreciated on an regular basis. Eking meaning out of a 60 year old book is simple - running a 60 year old program is a goddamn nightmare.
