  RCU uses epochs for synchronization. That's very different than winging it and waiting an arbitrary amount of time. In fact RCU exists exactly because the previously common method of waiting an arbitrary time before deleting a potentially shared reference and hoping for the best was no longer considered acceptable.

    That's still time as a synchronization primitive.
