In the past, if you wanted programs to work with a high-level idea, you had to explicitly hand it to them. Humans had to do the work of turning data into concepts. These generative AI systems are different - they can learn abstractions from data, and manipulate them in complex ways. Is ChatGPT a good and accurate chatbot? Maybe not. But it's a fundamental change in what computers are capable of.
