It seems unusual an article would spend so much attention deconstructing the psychology of gun ownership, but zero on statistics about how often guns are used in self-defense - the commonly stated reason for gun purchases. Especially as it's not shy about bringing up gun homicide statistics, or inventing a new category, "gun deaths", to pad the numbers with suicide, whereas in other contexts, the Times is pro-right-to-suicide, even assisted suicide [1,2]. I guess suicide is a legitimate choice, so long as the method isn't a gun?
To save you the trouble - though the Times did not deign to mention them, defensive gun use statistics do exist, and show such use of guns is pervasive [3,4].
