Ask HN: Any resources to learn how to benchmark API endpoints?
I feel that one wrong choice or step during benchmarking would completely change the outcome so I am looking for ANYTHING that can help me to prevent this.
- turtleyacht 3y agoCheck out JMeter. Lots of learning resources, battle-tested, and plenty of plugins. Comes with a GUI IDE and can be put into a container. Fire up a bunch of threads and have at it. https://jmeter.apache.org/ https://jmeter.apache.org/ https://jmeter-plugins.org/ https://jmeter-plugins.org/

- turtleyacht 3y agoIt's possible to roll your own. I'm setting up a pipeline with scripts, in order to democratize performance testing as a platform for any API. The basic ingredients are * A secured load test machine * Triggering git clone into a timestamped folder * Running jmeter headless against the .jmx file * Collecting results and running analysis Several of these steps are essentially emulating Jenkins, so of course use that if the environment will stick around for some time. For my use case, staying scrappy has the benefit of being easily scrapped (temporary hardware). Does this help?
