It Wasn't for Me (2016)
- thrixton 3y agoGood points there, we look for recommendations from the tribe, forgetting at times that the tribe is composed of individuals with varying, evolving tastes.
- helloplanets 3y agoThat phrase is definitely not used enough. It seems like there's so many faux pas related to books these days, which is pretty tragic. Having too many unread books, only reading a couple chapters of a book, reading too slow, not remembering the last page well enough, and the list goes on. No wonder so many people find reading imposing. Tangentially related to this would be Umberto Eco's Antilibrary: https://fs.blog/the-antilibrary/ https://fs.blog/the-antilibrary/
- xyzelement 3y ago"Not for me" is a really good concept and goes well beyond books. Example: There was a story on HN this week about a guy who's "over the hustle," citing Bezos' "it's always day 1" ethos as an example of a horrible way to work. I thought at the time that there are many people (a younger version of myself included) who enjoy working that way. It "wasn't for" the guy who wrote the story, but it is for some people. Framing this way makes room for growth, too. Eg, if going to the gym "isn't for me" - am I leaving something valuable on the table? Is there reason to consider becoming someone it IS for?
- throwaway22032 3y agoThe world could do with a lot more "it's not for me". Perhaps it's just getting old and cranky, but I feel like a ton of issues in our modern world can actually be solved by just accepting that not everyone likes the same things. Not everyone has the same opinions, not everyone has the same experience. And that's fine and in fact good - antifragile, for lack of better wording.
