Especially if that subway also went to the east side of Manhattan.

Then we would need a smaller, less expensive bus terminal in Manhattan.
- chiefalchemist 3y agoContext: I grew up and currently live in NJ. Rail runs into Manhattan via regular trail rail (e.g., Amtrak, NJ Transit), as well as via light rail (i.e., PATH). The buses pick up in different places than rail. Some people do bus to rail but that adds still more time to the trip. Also, the bus terminal isn't exclusively for commuter buses. On top of that, there's the cost of more / new holes in the ground. Certainly possible a la what they did in London, but that wasn't cheap either. Finally, relating to cost, per something I heard on NPR a couple of days ago, the NYC subway system is burdened with quite a bit of debt. The capital and support for a new subway station and line probably isn't there given the other financial problems of that org. All in all, a new bus terminal is more realistic.
- melling 3y agoContext: I’ve lived in NJ for 25+ years. At one point I lived 4.5 miles from work in Hoboken NJ and the commute took anywhere from 45 minutes to 90 minutes. The bus is extremely slow because everyone is going through a couple of tunnels in/out of an island. Sitting on the ramp into the station for 20 minutes is quite miserable too. I’ve also commuted from 40 miles out. All in all, the poor choices people in New Jersey made about mass transit makes me wonder if there isn’t lead in the water. Dig the hole. Finish the Path extension to the airport, fix the tunnel into Penn: https://www.nj.com/traffic/2015/10/christie_was_wrong_to_cancel_tunnel_project_in_2010_nj_residents_say_in_poll.html https://www.nj.com/traffic/2015/10/christie_was_wrong_to_can... All the complaints about the commuter fee because no one planned for the future: https://www.nj.com/bergen/2023/05/nj-congressional-delegation-asks-ny-governor-to-stop-nycs-planned-23-commuter-fee.html https://www.nj.com/bergen/2023/05/nj-congressional-delegatio...

That's because there's too small of a disincentive for less single passenger vehicle (read: cars) going in via the tunnels. Point is, it's not fair to blame the form of transportation for the lack of bus lanes and other transit / fee snafus. The bus experience could be improved but we continue to favor cars, cars, and cars. In addition, commercial occupancy rates are falling. That is, the market for commuter transportation is falling. I'm not disagreeing with your ends, but I'm not sure there's enough sociopolitical juice to make it happen.
