FWIW I do not believe there are lessons to be learned. All of the mistakes are already well known in their community of deep ocean explorers. Several of his peers tactfully for the most part explained on the news that he took many risks, broke many rules, avoided well known standards and took many dangerous short-cuts. He is on record saying nearly as much. The rest of that community already follow best practices and have well understood standards they follow and always put safety first.
