We Have Left the Cloud
- ezekg 3y agoThis is impressive. I wonder if they took any downtime during the migration of HEY (or Basecamp). I'm surprised this hasn't had more discussion.
- Nextgrid 3y ago> I'm surprised this hasn't had more discussion. Every cloud-skeptical post here has people parroting the same falsehoods over and over again, but now with actual, concrete evidence that disproves the lies those people have quietly gone home to eat crow.
- dijit 3y agoTo play devils advocate, those same detractors would claim that the real issue will be in the coming year. That the migration is a good chunk of work, sure, but the real challenge will be decaying hardware, operational issues related to firmware upgrades or having spares on hand or replacement parts that get discontinued by the manufacturer. That said, I am personally very happy to watch this, as a "cloud skeptic" myself.
- thefourthchime 3y ago“And if you tie yourself too much to their proprietary managed services or serverless offerings, you'll find it very difficult to escape, once the bills start going to the moon.” We (very large company) have been migrating to AWS for a couple of years. Of course as part of the package Amazon provided some "experts" who "guided" us to what technology to use. The answer of course is all the AWS-specific ones. Most of our teams are so embedded into AWS-specific tech now, it would be a near rewrite to leave.
- mathattack 3y agoTHIS! Listening to their experts on what add-one to buy is like listening to car salesman on what add-one you should purchase for your vehicles. The incentives just aren’t aligned. Of course cloud-neutral vendors like Mongo are no better.
- raincom 3y agoGood to know that avoided kubernetes. Instead, they went with MRSK(Manage Remote Server Kontainers). Another source of huge headaches is removed.
- ksec 3y ago>And now, after six months of effort, it's done. We're out. I wonder, if they were to repeat the whole process again, with all Hardware, Servers, being immediately available. MRSK fine tuned and known from day 1. How long would the whole process take? Could it be done in 3 weeks? I assume most of the time will actually be Data transfer?
