Redhat has some packaging scripts that detect rpath and refuse to install binaries that set it. This has caused me a good couple of days of grief and lead directly to shipping a worse product. Specifically, clang -fopenmp a.cpp -o a.out used to give you a binary that would run with ./a.out, but now it'll give you something that complains that it can't find the openmp runtime library. Unless you happen to have llvm installed globally, like redhat presumably does.
I now cheerfully try to talk people into dropping IBM Linux support whenever it comes up in discussion. Haven't succeeded yet but will keep trying. I want it out of the requirements graph. I liked rpath and will not forget the unjustified line of reasoning behind disabling it.
