There's a difference between knowing that a certain number of people are statistically dying right now vs knowing that 5 specific people are currently dying in a specific way.
- wslh 3y agoSpecific way, more linked to people deaths combined with specific vehicles: Drivers and Formula 1, spaceships and astronauts, etc.
- MisterBastahrd 3y agoMost of the people getting shot in mass shootings aren't doing something stupid on purpose.
- midoridensha 3y agoI think part of it is what society has deemed an "acceptable loss". So most developed societies, for instance, are OK with people dying in mangled steel cages on roads because most people in those places think car-based societies are worth the cost in lives. US society in particular is OK with people dying in mass shootings, because American people think having access to guns is so important. But if a bunch of people die in an aircraft crash due to negligence, suddenly it's different because that's not an acceptable loss: it was preventable. Mass shootings aren't preventable in the US because most people there value "gun rights" over these deaths, just like the US and many other places value car culture over the deaths caused by cars.
- s1artibartfast 3y agoMost of the people shot in Mass shootings (by the definition) are doing something stupid, specifically drug dealing and gang warfare. Very boring stuff
- hodgesrm 3y agoCitation please? I don't recall a lot of drug-dealing at Uvalde last year. [0] https://www.texastribune.org/series/uvalde-texas-school-shooting/ https://www.texastribune.org/series/uvalde-texas-school-shoo...
- CrampusDestrus 3y agoYou seem to conflate mass shootings with school shootings
- Wistar 3y agoWas the 2017 Las Vegas shooting a mass shooting or a music festival shooting?
