I agree that chat is not meant to handle knowledge, but I don't think a forum is the right approach either. What people probably want is a proper centralized knowledgebase like a wiki. Personally, I'm happy for my chat app to be good at ephemeral instant communication, my forum to be good at longer-form async discussion, and my wiki to be good as a searchable read-heavy knowledgebase.
