So what happens to .dev domains? Squarespace said they wouldn't raise prices for a year, but what happens afterwards?
- agwa 3y agoGoogle will continue to "own" .dev; you just won't be able to buy .dev domains directly from them anymore. .dev domains will continue to be available for purchase from registrars besides Squarespace. (Google is only selling their registrar, not their registry - see https://www.agwa.name/blog/post/domain_pricing_is_very_confusing https://www.agwa.name/blog/post/domain_pricing_is_very_confu... to understand the difference.)
- lolinder 3y agoThe question still stands— is Squarespace going to now be capable of selling .dev domains? Or are they just going to hold on to the legacy ones? Or those going to go to a different registrar altogether? The weirdest thing about this whole sale isn't that it's happening, it's the fact that Google hasn't communicated at all.
