I agree with you, but I'll admit that I still think bike helmets and safety goggles look stupid. It's much cooler to be safe, but too often it's impossible to look cool while doing it.

In the car hobby, safety gear is often seen as a "flex" item and I think that's wonderful. That said there's a lot of posers that put unsafe aftermarket safety items (e.g. 4 point belts without a HANS device, roll cages without helmets)
