Really interesting, I know there is a lot of hesitancy around the billions that are flowing to the IRS for modernization and more agents for enforcement but I do wonder if it'll let the IRS focus on the much more complex investigations needed to find wrongdoing from wealthy people who have probably filled out all the correct forms meticulously with an army of accountants and tax lawyers, but are doing some shady stuff nonetheless rather than going after the low hanging simple mistakes (and probably simpler fraud schemes) by low-income earners.
- mistrial9 3y agoafter a recent and publicized (post-covid 19) addition of agents to the IRS, a neighbor in California got a summary readjustment of their low-income in a high cost-of-living area; the summary adjust showed an additional $23,000 in taxable income, with no supporting documentation. After making an appointment and waiting for weeks to contact the office, the adjustment was declared "in error" and rescinded, again with no supporting documentation.
