I've definitely noticed weirdness with Google directions lately. It will routinely send me down streets that are obviously, clearly worse choices - slower, with more lights, and more local streets than the arterial streets that I would normally use. As well, it insists on naming my cities main streets by their highway #s rather than the actual names of the street - which is extra confusing because the two directions of the "highway" are the two one-way main streets through town.
