im genuinely curious, why cant we just severely punish ANY form of scamming? if you are willfully scamming other people, why cant the law rightfully come down SUPER HARD on it?
scamming is not okay, no matter who does it for ANY reason, and NO MATTER TO WHOM
- ronsor 3y agoBecause the scammers are typically outside the country, so good luck actually getting them arrested. Even if you do get them arrested in their own country, the grease known as money is often very good at getting the gears of corruption to turn; they'll be out in 24 hours or less.
- ericbarrett 3y agoIMO this has long passed the point of being a national security issue, and legislators need to start taking it seriously, up to and including harsh embargoes against uncooperative hosts.
- redeeman 3y agowell sure, if we cant do it we cant, however, I would say this is a problem that too can be solved. But it is also a question of WANT, and the one i replied to suggested we should specially punish those who scam elderly etc, and I would suggest we simply raise the level of punishment for ALL scammers
- is_true 3y agoIn Argentina most scammers are operating here. I think harsher punishments would be a way to make them think twice before doing it.
- redeeman 3y agoits popular these days to say "punishments dont work, focus on rehabilitation!!!", but really, punishments and fear of punishments for sure work. If the scammers knew that the punishment would be extremely severe, they'd think twice. If we dedicate even more resources to finding them and punishng them, they will think thrice. then you may say: "But what about when they come out? they'll just do more crime!!". Well... I can think of an adjustment to this premise that solves the problem.
- DropInIn 3y agoYour confusing simple punishment with the concept of Deterrents. Deterrents do have an effect but only to a point, with further escalation beyond that point also escalating the severity of associated offences. Eg - if you have a death sentence for minor theft then those who are desperate will still steal but instead of giving up peacefully when caught they will murder as many as the need to get away. Deterrents and punishment schemes can most definitely, and many currently do, cause more harms than benefits.
