Kudos to this guy. Managing a blog with traffic and an active community is a much bigger challenge than most would think.
I ran a blog from 2005 until 2013, with some real strong activity on posting and community building between 2008 and 2010. I was spending ~30-40 hours a week researching and writing posts (two >1000 word posts a day--4 days a week with Friday being a 'fun poll day'). During the height of my blogging activity I was approving easily more than 1,000 comments a month over a multi-year period.
WordPress handled 99.9% of the spam so that was never really any issue. What WAS an issue, being that I wrote posts on both hyperlocal news and restaurant reviews, was an astounding amount of astroturfing from the friends/families/neighbors/owners of restaurants.
I would mercilessly track these people down and find out who they were and publicly shame them for what they were doing. I saw it as a huge value add over (then) nascent sites like Yelp and Urbanspoon which largely allowed this sort of activity unabated--and continue to this day as has been reported recently on HN.
I really wish there were better alternatives both for restaurants as well as product reviews which took the care and attention that I gave for my small community.
