I couldn't read the article because it's paid content, but I'd definiteley spam [x] to doubt. Apple is a hardware company and maybe a case could be made its a services company. It might be aspirationally positioning itself to benefit from AI but its not an AI company. Its kind of like a few years ago when everyone was "big data" or a "cloud company". AI is primarily going to be a technique or a feature. Yes companies like OpenAI may develop a superior model and API but primarily there won't be many pure AI companies. A lot of people are talking about AI for Law or AI for doctors. I don't think this will happen, much like Uber for [x] or Google for [x] really only materialized in some very narrow verticals.

You can't take the author literally. All they're saying is that many of the best features coming in iOS 17 and macOS 14 are AI-based and it's pretty likely there will more big features coming in the future based on AI. I'm sure there's an entire AI story for Apple Vision Pro that we're not aware of yet. Every device running on Apple Silicon since 2017 has a neural engine [1] to speed up certain types of AI computations. That's many tens of millions of devices. And because Apple has frameworks and APIs in their operating systems, developers can add AI features without having to be AI experts themselves. I'd be shocked if Apple isn't working on device-based, privacy preserving generative AI right now.
