David Pogue pointed out “jerry-rigged” design of OceanGate’s missing Titanic sub
- dieselgate 3y agoIt’s sort of tough to gauge one way or the other - the lighting components seem to work well (and it’s probably LED) why does it matter the supplier? Just depends what your standards of “jerry-rigged” is - for us “hackers” on HN we may have a higher threshold and it’s not like this sub was “duct taped with bailing wire”. I think of jerry/jury-rigged as literally a boat mast that’s snapped and is reattached by any means - comparatively this sub is polished. I wouldn’t go down to see the titanic on this thing though but would probably go for a short test. Edit: needless to say this isn’t the time for “told ya so” wishing the passengers and recovery crew the best
- xwdv 3y agoThe controls for this sub are a shitty Logitech controller you can buy off the shelf in Walmart, and a single button.
- incogitor 3y agoExactly. Not waterproof, not variable pressure/temperature tested, not industrial or milspec. This thing sounds like a "COTS" death trap.
