Is Truecaller app an absolute necessity to have these days?
I happen to use the Truecaller web service[1] (not the mobile app) to look up the occasional blank call or unknown Whatsapp message that turns up. I think that's the right way to use Truecaller because the mobile app is just too intrusive of permissions. But today, the web service seems to be down and doesn't allow oauth sign ins through microsoft or google.
I don't know about other countries but over here in India, this app has almost become a de-facto these days. It's used by practically everyone for two purposes:
1) CallerID - Know who this number belongs to.
2) Block Spam - Marketing for credit cards, loans, etc. turn up a lot.
Is Truecaller the only utility in India for this? Is there no alternative service or app where phone numbers can be looked up? During our millennial days (90s era), there used to be something called "BSNL Telephone Directory" published by the telco annually where we used to look up unknown numbers. Is there no such service available today?

- jqpabc123 3y agoI block every unknown number that is not in my contact list. With Android, you can do this by turning "Do Not Disturb" *ON* and setting appropriate parameters to allow known callers through as normal. Unknown numbers still show up in my call log so I can look them up online at my leisure to see who they are, where they're from and call them back ... or not. No paid service required in the USA.
