If AI gets too powerful, it could start making decisions in military battles
- bell-cot 3y agoI keep getting the impression that none of the journalists getting excited about "AI" and military situations have any real concept of how a old-fashioned minefield works. Nor the sorts of lethal booby-traps which clever soldiers could rig along a thinly-held defensive line. Nor torpedoes. Nor free-floating sea mines. Nor quite a few other military technologies...which were widely available a ~century ago.
- notanothereric 3y agoRegarding taking the human out of the decision making loop, fully autonomous mode seems inevitable given the current Achilles heel of the most sophisticated UAVs - the requirement to maintain an uplink for command and control. Given our friendly fire experience with conventional forces… AI will likely have similar issues even in the best case scenarios.
