NHTSA tells auto makers to ignore Massachusetts “right to repair” law
- mr_toad 3y ago> It warned that a malicious actor "could utilize such open access to remotely command vehicles to operate dangerously, including attacking multiple vehicles concurrently. This sounds like ridiculous fearmongering .
- spazx 3y agoIt is. Mass resident here. When the groups against this law were campaigning, they televised very creepy PSAs explaining this farcical point, to scare residents into voting against it. One I remember in particular was a POV shot of a man stalking a woman in a parking garage on her way to her vehicle.
- diydsp 3y agoYes. Also the ballot question was extremely obfuscated. My gf voted against it not knowing what it was.
- deceptionatd 3y ago> open access "allows for manipulation of systems on a vehicle, including safety-critical functions such as steering, acceleration, or braking." I assume this is just FUD, but if true it raises another question: why are braking, acceleration, and steering manipulable in real-time through network-facing software?
