Wave of spam bots hits Reddit alternative Lemmy servers
Someone else commented a few hours ago in GitHub
> I had over 800 spam signups overnight

And here is likewise a comment from myself about my instance
> I just got hit by a wave of bot accounts.
> I immediately noticed this because I had ~5 users on my instance and then suddenly today I have >669 users.

I am fearing that spam bots will kill Lemmy just like spam bots killed Usenet discussions years ago. Hopefully this will not be the case.
For now I myself am shutting off my instance so that the spam bots registered on my instance do not negatively affect other instances.
- detaro 3y agowelcome to running services on the internet, sadly. Many Mastodon instances either are invite-only (i.e. existing users can invite new users) or use some sort of approval-process (write a message to admin, admin approves account) - even quite simple ones can catch non-targeted spam attacks. That helps, especially if its only a sole admin/moderator and not a larger instance with a team.
