Lower calorie is only better if trying to lose weight. I'm trying to get my daily calories (to maintain or increase my current weight) for cheap, so high-calorie inexpensive foods are preferable. Low-calorie foods are only worthwhile if they're particularly nutrient dense (ex. green vegetables).
Another downside of low-calorie foods (apart from price) is that it's hard to eat enough volume of them to stay at the same weight (which negatively affects strength/focus). For example, 2000 calories of grated carrot would be ~11x the maximum stomach capacity of an average person.
