While I don’t disagree that what you put in is crucial, I believe there is quite a lot of evidence to support the theory that gut bacteria plays a role in weight (and overall health in general).
Obesity is actually a pretty complex disease. To argue that to solve the issue one should just “eat less” is overly simplistic. If it was actually that simple we would not have an obesity epidemic. There are environmental, social, cultural and psychological aspects to obesity, as well as the complex biological inner workings, making “eat less” a pretty ignorant solution to a complex problem.
- eternityforest 3y agoIt's slightly better than the other oversimplified solution of "Just excercise more". Technically some people say you live longer if you excercise even if you're overweight compared to a thin person who doesn't, but it's also a whole lot harder so if someone can't just solve the problem with less food, I don't see how they could solve it with more excercise. Unless the whole problem is they're doing unhealthy things because they're sad, and they're one of those people that will feel so good about getting stronger and setting PRs that they'll no longer want to eat their feelings and will want to keep excercising.
- theGeatZhopa 3y agoThe world's elderly are more healthy and older where ever they constraint to eat less food. Often, or better, always, that food isn't preprocessed in any way by machinery and intents of industrial production. But rather freshly made like rice. Noodles. All with natural ingredients, that may be self produced, too. A diet with lots of fat fish and less carbohydrates allows some Japanese elderly to live looong time. It's not about exercise. They don't exercise anymore since long time, I guess..
- theGeatZhopa 3y agoActually it's pretty easy. Whatever energy you put in, that will be used. Stop drinking cola, eat burgers and more salad. The whole thing is just willingness. Even there are things like gut bacteria transfer, and so.. still. Even with the wrong bacteria it's a matter of what and how much you eat.
- anonymouskimmer 3y agoNo fucking duh. It's just that some people have to deal with chronic pain to control their weight, while other people can't seem to put weight on no matter how much they try, and yet other people are able to maintain a healthy weight no matter what they eat. It has been shown that some people's gut bacteria are far more efficient at extracting energy from what is eaten than other people's bacteria. And somewhat counter-intuitively, the bacteria that is more efficient at extracting energy is also faster at processing the food (with bowel movements up to 3 times faster than the less efficient gut bacteria). So those with gut bacteria that harvest the energy the most effectively are also going to be those who experience chronic empty stomach. If you don't like what people eat why don't you control what they eat? It's just a matter of exercising your will to control other people. No big deal. You should be able to do it right? Any particular reason you aren't running a 3:52 minute mile? Just a matter of will to develop those muscles, right?
- theGeatZhopa 3y agoI didn't want to upset you. Nope, while I mainly agree with what you say, it's still what you put in is what will be used. We say, it's brutto on a day scale. All the other factors are just parameters of what has been used up in time, like how much energy in sport (variable), what's the capacity of the gut bacteria/hour, the amount of muscles and the basic energy consumption, ..., I want to call them netto(s). In the end, brutto - netto = 0 should be aimed uppon. So: Brutto - usedUpSport - usedUpBacteria - ... = 0 If you're at balance, fine. Out of balance in both directions is to be viewed from different points. So if you can't do sports, you should ingest the equivalent of energy less to have a lower brutto. This means eat a salad instead of chips. So bacteria, whatever is of course an big big big effect. I have had a time in my live where I got vanco and gento in high doses at least once a year for like 3 weeks in a row. For like 7 years. I didn't become big poppa, because of the bad bacteria allegedly caused by stark antibiotics over time. And then, I've had a chance to allow my guts to rest like for 8 weeks, in which the lower bowels after ilio didn't got any food (Iliostoma). But before the Iliostoma, the treatment with 7 different antibiotics was necessary. 3 were reserved antibiotics, then vanco, gento and not remember the others. After that I was completely free of whatever may have lived inside me. Then, the stoma has been laid back an me healthy like hell. Nothing for 7+ years. Nothing. Even when I wanted to fall ill.. so yes, absolutely! But still, I eat not more than before because I have better bacteria again. I'm always hungry, yes, but prefer a healthy snack every time to still hunger.. and I'm not big poppa. I don't do sports, otherwise I have to consume more proportionally not to lose mass. It's all willingness. It's your freedom to decide what, when and how much you eat. If you can't say no to the cake, then compensate it some where other time.. each one knows his own body the best :) No one wants to force you or someone other. It's like, you can have transplant stool/bacteria of a healthy, "thin", donator. There are old study cases where very very obese people have been able to loose weight - while still eating like before more or less. Like Master Yoda would say "small will you have. Other bacteria you need. Eat less you must. Other bacteria then you don't need" It's just, I keep mental track of what I eat, so I know when I can allow me some sins. It's my willingness and my choice. No one forced me.
