Well, except for when you program the software that way.

- TaylorAlexander 3y agoOkay, the software has a slur filter built in. Seems great! I also assume users of their own instance can remove that, but this might affect visibility on other hosts.
- faangsticle 3y agoThe discussion is about making it configurable, which was rejected.
- lolinder 3y agoIt was made configurable just over a year later. https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/blob/main/RELEASES.md#lemmy-release-v0140-federation-with-mastodon-and-pleroma-2021-11-17 https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/blob/main/RELEASES.md#lemm...
- nyanpasu64 3y agoHilariously a year after saying they would never remove the slur filter, they did just that in 0.14 (https://lemmy.ml/post/89740 https://lemmy.ml/post/89740). I'm not sure if that's a good look or not.
- imiric 3y agoIt's definitely an improvement. Instances should be allowed to moderate speech however they want to. Good software is continuously improved. Criticizing the authors for an arguably wrong design decision they've corrected years ago is vengeful and petty. It's no different than the viral rumors spread by the Mastodon thread TFA mentions. This is abhorrent behavior that has no place in the open source community.
