China's universities now lead the world in quality published research.[0]
For example, 18/20 of the top universities in the world in Chemistry is in China.
They're copying the world as much as the world will be/is copying them.
Quite honestly, a significant amount of the research papers published in the US are done by international Chinese students anyway, including AI papers.
TikTok created the world's best content recommendation machine learning models. Google, Meta haven't come close to matching TikTok yet. My Youtube Shorts recommendations are often dreadful. I don't think examples like this will be one-offs.
I think we're going to see more and more of China simply surpassing others in bleeding tech. Why is this important? Because one day China, it'll be a common occurrence and we don't have to be confused about why China could lead in something if all they do is just copy.

- smoldesu 3y ago> TikTok created the world's best content recommendation machine learning models. Google, Meta haven't come close to matching TikTok yet. Honestly, I disagree entirely here. TikTok's recommendation feed makes me feel like I'm being exploited rather than assisted. It's "entertainment" in the same way cornmeal is "food". YouTube Shorts is hardly much better, but at least the content meta is higher quality. There are hundreds of educational channels getting good exposure on YouTube, on TikTok it feels like thirst traps and "look at me" type challenges (at least here in America). Meta on the other hand has proven that they have significant internal research they could drop at any moment and change the game. They released Whisper and changed the status-quo of speech-to-text overnight, and then dropped LLaMA to again change the world of local inferencing. I don't like any of these companies, but they've more sufficiently demonstrated that they can use AI to progress common interest better than the CCP has. I'd love to be refuted on that, though.

- smoldesu 3y agoThat's the difference a free market makes, I suppose. Or at least the freedom of information, take your pick.
- senttoschool 3y agoWhy do you think TikTok wasn’t created in a free market?
- smoldesu 3y agoI don't know. They won't tell us.
- senttoschool 3y agoYou’re just trolling at the point. I would suggest that you check your media sources. Think about the last time you read a neutral article on China. Perhaps learn some modern history of China. Seems like you’re still stuck in 1945.

- senttoschool 3y agoI just ate a sandwich. What does your point and my sandwich have to do with quality research output?
- smoldesu 3y agoDoes it taste better with or without the boot?
- senttoschool 3y agoIt didn’t have a boot in it. It doesn’t seem to be possible to have a objective conversation for China here
- smoldesu 3y agoSeems so.
