It was as messy, if not messier, than you can imagine. We rolled out kafka to address exactly these issues where lots of people were generating messages and lots of people needed to process some of them. It was still significant work to manage that infrastructure in a globally redundant environment, but far far far far more manageable for ops teams and data producers/consumers than the BIG DB ever would be.
