I daily drive an obscure Linux distribution on a Thinkpad. I value free software and customisation. But I still use an iPhone. Why? Three reasons. One: reliability. I rely on my phone for payments: I no longer even carry a wallet most of the time. My phone has to work. And my iPhone just works. Over the years Apple have earned my trust - a trust that was repeatedly shattered when I ran Android. Two: security. I trust my phone with my entire digital life. Apple’s walled garden is inherently significantly more secure than Android’s ecosystem. I also trust Apple more than I do Google on hardware and software security. For example, see the recent Pixel lockscreen bypass. Apple quite simply don’t fuck up like this. It just doesn’t happen. Three: ergonomics. Android and other free phone operating systems are not in the same league. By the way, I can do everything mentioned in this article with iSh on my phone.
